BEETLES

General description

First look for the wings and wing covers. Most insects have wings, and those that do have two pairs. Beetles differ from all other winged insects by having the first pair of wings hardened and thickened. These hard forewings serve as a protective shield for the fragile flying wings, which are folded underneath.

SUN BEETLES

These attractive insects are SUN BEETLES, a very common beetle species which in the wild live in west and central Africa and which are commonly found on Acacia trees. These beetles feed on ripe fruit such as bananas and can fly surprisingly well! These species the beetle larvae cannot be seen, cannot be played with and can actually bite.

BLUE DEATH FEIGNING

Blue Death-feigning Beetles are native to the Mojave and Sonoran Desert regions in the Southwest U.S., but their range extends to surrounding states and Mexico. Blue death feigning beetles are omnivorous, which means they will eat nearly anything you give them. They often enjoy chopped carrots, celery, and lettuce. Give them 1 or 2 small pieces (about the size of your fingernail) at a time. The Blue Death-Feigning Beetle gets its name from its inherent ability to play death when threatened by predators. The Blue Death-Feigning Beetle is also known by the name(s) of: Ghost Beetle; Desert Ironclad Beetle.

RHINO BEETLES

Rhinoceros Beetles are part of the Scarab Beetle family and are totally harmless to humans. They do not bite, sting, or carry any type of poisonous venom. They are excellent first pets for insect enthusiasts as the are generally docile and easy to care for. Despite their aggressive appearance they make very docile pets.

STAG BEETLES

In Britain, they are found in southern and southeastern areas of England. Some species grow to 8 centimetres, but most are about 5 centimetres. Stag beetles have a dark, violet-brown wing cases with reddish-brown antlers the females antlers are much smaller than the males. Rhinoceros Beetles can lift something 850 times their own weight. To put this into perspective, if a human had the strength of the rhinoceros beetle, it would be able to lift a 65 ton object. If the mighty elephant had equal strength to the rhinoceros beetle it would be able to carry 850 elephants on its back.
