HOGNOSE
Heterodon Kennerlyi
The Mexican hognose is a sedentary species that needs little room. So a 1ft by 1ft by 1ft glass enclosure or similar size tub is suitable as an enclosure, you can get bigger enclosures but they don't need a huge space.
SUBSTRATE
Use any loose material that allows the snake to burrow, and remain dry. Aspen or fine grade beech chippings work well. These snakes will burrow under cork bark or other decorations so just be careful with the weight of your decorations and they will often come out on a night time.
FEEDING
Babies should be fed pinkie mice.
1 year olds should have fuzzies.
Adults should be fed small mice.
Try feeding them on a night time as this is when they tend to be more active.
Water
A small shallow water dish should be provided with fresh water daily - never allow the substrate to become wet or damp.
HEATING AND LIGHTING
A basking light isn't needed, a heat mat with a temperature of 85.F for day time, allowing a slight drop on the night time.
BEHAVIOUR
These snakes will flatten their head, puff up, hiss and rattle their tail as a defence mechanism and if this doesn't work then they have one last defence which is striking. These snakes are rear fanged but they're technically not venomous. Some people have been known to have allergic reactions to their bites though. Make sure to handle these snakes with extra care and we don't recommend them for beginners.
SIZING AND LIFE EXPECTANCY
Adults will typically grow to around 15-25 inches.
Their life expectancy is quite long and is around 12-20 years.
WHAT IS THEIR NATURAL HABITATE LIKE AND WHAT IS THEIR CARE LEVEL?
Their natural habitat is dry desert surroundings as these will originate from Mexico.
Their care level is intermediate and like said before we do not recommend that a beginner gets one of these.
